55% of garage-owning Americans spend 1 to 2 hours per week in the garage. Because of this, having a good floor coating is essential. A polyurea floor coating will keep the garage floor in good condition (and looking great) even if you spend significant time there.
Now that you have a nice coating over your garage floor, do you know how to take care of it? Let’s talk about it. Read on for some quick tips on caring for your new polyurea floor coating.
Avoid Harsh Cleaning Products
While you may want to keep your garage floor clean, it’s best to avoid using any harsh cleaning products or chemicals unless you absolutely have to. The polyurea floor coating is strong and sturdy, but certain chemicals can weaken it.
Instead of using cleaning chemicals, use a mop or rag with water to clean any spills or grime off of the floor. This shouldn’t cause any damage and as long as you’re quick, it will be more than sufficient to keep your floor coatings clean.
Sweep or Vacuum Often
It’s a good idea to get rid of any debris with a broom or vacuum. You don’t have to sweep or vacuum your garage floor as often as you’d sweep or vacuum your indoor spaces, but do it at least once per month if your garage doesn’t get too much floor traffic.
If you’re always doing work in your garage, you may want to do it as often as once per week. This will stop any debris from getting pressed into the floor coating and it will prevent potential damage (and, of course, it will keep the floor looking clean and tidy).
Seal Every Six to Twelve Months
When you first get your polyurea floor coating, it will look fresh, clean, and shiny. After a few months, that freshness will fade and the floor will start to look duller. It’s still protecting your concrete floors, but it’s a good idea to re-seal the coating at least once per year to keep it in its best possible condition.
This will help you prevent scratches and stains and it will even make your floors easier to clean. Plus, it looks great.
Keep Children and Pets Off of the Floors
It’s inevitable that if you have children or pets, they’ll probably be on the garage floor at least sometimes. Do your best to keep small children and pets out of the garage as often as possible, however. They could potentially damage the floors.
If children or pets are spending substantial time in the garage, sweep and inspect the floors after they leave. Of course, you should also do your best to prevent wild animals from coming in. They can also cause damage.
Watch Out for Damage
Speaking of damage, you should take a quick look at the floors semi-frequently (preferably whenever you sweep) to look for scrapes, chips, and stains. If you repair them quickly, your floor will stay in good condition for longer. If you’re unsure how to repair your floor coating, give us a call!
